Canoeing, Kayaking and Sailing at Arethusa Water Sports Centre

Watersports Course

The Arethusa Watersports Centre runs a variety of RYA (sailing) and BCU (kayaking and canoeing) courses throughout the season for both adults and children.

All courses are taught by qualified RYA or BCU instructors, who are CRB checked and have a valid first aid qualification.

The courses are based at Basin No. 2, Chatham Maritime.

RYA Level 1 Dinghy course – Start Sailing (2 days)

This course gives an introduction to the sport of dinghy sailing and the techniques involved. During the course you will learn boat handling techniques, and essential background knowledge under the watchful eye of our RYA qualified sailing instructors.

RYA Level 2 Dinghy Course – Basic Skills (2 days)

This course builds on knowledge already gained from RYA Level 1. It improves your boat handling technique and includes some essential safety techniques, which will allow you to sail your boat without supervision in light winds. During the course a capsize-recovery will take place in a controlled environment.

RYA Stage 1 Course
This course is designed to introduce children to sailing and give them a basic understanding of boat handling and steering. It also improves water confidence and safety under the watchful eye of our qualified RYA instructors.

RYA Stage 2 Course

This course builds on knowledge already gained from RYA Stage 1 in a fun and friendly way. The course will give a range of sailing skills and background knowledge which will mean by the end of the course your child will be well on the way to becoming a confident small boat sailor.

BCU Paddlepower Passport

A 3 day course introducing children to kayaking and canoeing. It includes basic kayak and canoe handling skills, equipment use and safety on the water. As well as using the watersports centre we also go for a journey on the River Medway on the last day of the course.
